How to Drive More Traffic to Your Blog from Instagram

Instagram can be a great marketing tool for growing your blog. If you have 10,000 followers, you can use the swipe up link option to drive traffic to your blog. Even with that, I get more traffic from the link in my bio where I can easily send people in new posts. However, you only get one link in your bio, so you have to use it wisely.

Creating your own Instagram landing page will drive more traffic to your blog without letting a third party take the traffic. For a long time, I used Linktr.ee. I know others use LYNX in Bio or similar options. You don’t need either of these. Take time to set up your own Instagram landing page on your blog to drive more traffic directly to your blog.

WHY DO I NEED A LANDING PAGE TO DRIVE TRAFFIC TO MY BLOG

There are a few benefits to having your own landing page instead of using a third party site to link over to you. One is that using them hurts your traffic by stealing away page views. It also hurts your bounce rate instead of helping it.

In the few months that I have had my own Instagram landing page, it has received nearly 2,000 clicks. That is 2,000 extra page views for my blog. Before, I lost thousands of page views to Linktr.ee. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for them as they helped me use multiple links long before I knew about creating my own landing page. However, I think back and realize I could have had all of those extra page views.

There is a chance that some people click on your link and then don’t go any further. You are now getting those views, sessions, and users instead of the third party site.

You are also likely to improve your bounce rate and your session duration. If someone clicks on your page and then clicks away, they have “bounced”. If they click on your link in your bio and then click through to read a post, they no longer count as a bounce. A lower bounce rate shows Google that people are interested in what you have to say.

It also improves your session duration. Whenever someone bounces, they count as being on your site for 0 seconds. Even if they spend 10 minutes reading a post, they do not count because Google tracks time by actions. If they look at your landing page and then click over to read something, they count for those few seconds. If they go click back to it or click through to something else, Google can use that to register the time they spent on your site.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR INSTAGRAM LANDING PAGE

Setting up an Instagram landing page is fairly easy and can be done in an hour or two. It is worth the time and very easy to maintain once you have it set up. You only have to switch out or add new posts or links as needed once you get it set up.

1. CREATE A NEW PAGE

Do not create a new post, create a new page. Give that page a title. I use Insta Links for mine, but you can use any title you would like. I’ve seen titles like Instagram Links, IG Links, Top Links, etc. The title isn’t so important as people are not likely to be finding you through this page other than through Instagram.

2. CREATE BUTTONS FOR YOUR LINKS

You can use a number of sites and programs to do this, but I use Canva (I just use the free version). My buttons are 800px by 100 px. I created a plain colored background that matches the theme of my site and my Pinterest pins. To keep it consistent, I also use the fonts I typically use on my pins.

I like to split my blog posts into a few categories for my buttons to label them. A couple of popular blog posts stay at the bottom of my Insta Links page. I keep my new blog posts at the top. When I post a picture related to an old blog post that isn’t already there, I create a featured blog post button for it. It takes no time at all to copy the button and then type in the new words and save it.

3. UPLOAD AND LINK THE BUTTONS

Once you’ve created and saved your buttons, upload them to your website. I use WordPress, so I just upload the images and then add a link to each one of them. I do this as I upload them as it is the easiest way to me.

When I upload them, in the upload box, I scroll down on the left side to where it says Link To and make sure it says Custom URL. Then I type in the URL.

After I have the image linked to the blog post or page that it is supposed to send readers to, I insert the image and arrange them in the order I want.

4. PUBLISH OR UPDATE YOUR LANDING PAGE

Then you are good to go! Publish it or update it as you change it and make sure to add your new link to you Instagram bio. You have now set up your Instagram landing page, although sometimes it takes a few minutes to update when I view the page through Instagram. I think this has to do with it being cached on my phone as it shows up correctly in the browser window on my phone and laptop.
